USS Turner Joy Amateur Radio Club
Veteran's Day, November 11, 2010
The Club will operate all day from the Turner Joy. Hours of Operation will be 0800 until 1800 Pacific Time. Frequencies will be posted shortly. The following message on the topic comes from the president:
Lady and Gentlemen,
You have before you the opportunity not afforded to many associated with Ham Radio. To actually stay aboard the ship that fired the First and Last rounds into Viet Nam. To walk those hallowed decks, to occupy the same spaces valiant sailors fought for their very lives. Feel the roll and pitch of the ship that took a 44 degree roll on the Tasman Sea. Smell again the acrid smoke of guns that fire over 10,000 rounds the final three weeks of the war, guns so hot the paint was burned off the barrels. Lie down in bunks that weary sailors crawled into after hours at General Quarters. The bunks were hard, the life was harder. Come aboard and call CQ, this is NS7DD, the USS Turner Joy, DD-951, Last of the Gun Ships, Charter Member of the Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club. Stay at home if you will, the Brave will answer the call to duty once more. Come and Honor those millions who left homes and family, and the many thousands who didn't return. The cost, FREE, paid in advance, courtesy of the United States Navy.
KA7UMR, formerly IC2, USS TURNER JOY, DD-951 1970-75. ESSE QUAM VIDERI
